Why a Visible Cockroach in Napa Is Never Just One Cockroach
Cockroaches are nocturnal insects that spend most of their time in hidden harborage sites — behind refrigerators, inside cabinets, under sinks, within wall voids, and inside electrical equipment. A cockroach seen during daylight hours indicates harborage sites are overcrowded.
In Napa, the most commonly treated species are the German cockroach and the American cockroach. German cockroaches reproduce rapidly and develop resistance to insecticides when the same product is applied repeatedly. Effective treatment requires identifying the correct species and eliminating the colony.
Avoid Spraying Before Professional Treatment
DIY aerosol sprays are counterproductive ahead of professional treatment. They cause colony dispersal — cockroaches retreat deeper into walls and appliance interiors, making the distribution of infestation harder to map and the colony harder to reach. Health Risks
- Pathogen Spread: As cockroaches forage across kitchen surfaces, they deposit bacteria from their digestive systems — including Salmonella and E. coli — on countertops, cutting boards, and food contact surfaces. Contamination occurs with every pass, regardless of whether the insect is seen.
- Allergen & Asthma Risk: Cockroach droppings, cast skins, and dried saliva particles are established respiratory allergens. In enclosed living spaces, accumulation of these particles is associated with increased asthma frequency and severity — particularly in children and those with pre-existing respiratory conditions.
